Green Destinations Story Awards 2023

The live event took place at ITB Berlin, Tuesday 07 March 2023 at 1630 hours CET.

Green Destinations is excited to have celebrated the most inspiring Good Practice Stories from the 2022 Top 100 list at its annual flagship award ceremony, the Green Destinations Story Awards 2023. All approaches described in these stories were considered for one of the below-mentioned categories of the Green Destinations Story Awards 2023 – hosted by ITB Berlin 2023 and presented by Anula Galewska (Travindy) and Gopinath Parayil (The Blue Yonder). 

The selection for the awards was conducted by the Green Destinations Story Awards International Jury of experts. The important selection criteria included: the level of innovation, how effective the stories are in solving real problems in tourism sustainability, and to what extent they can be applied elsewhere.

The nominated destinations per category were announced on 5 January 2023, and the winning destinations were unveiled during the award ceremony at ITB Berlin 2023 on Tuesday, 7 March. The list of category winners securing ‘First Place’ at the ceremony is underlined below:

  • Normandie (France) – Governance, Reset & Recovery
  • Azraq Wetland Reserve (Jordan) – Nature & Scenery 
  • Barbados (Barbados) – Environment & Climate 
  • Ozu (Japan) and Bombinhas (Brazil) – Culture & Tradition 
  • Huay Pu Keng (Thailand) – Thriving Communities 
  • Royal Djurgården (Sweden) – Business & Marketing

The ITB Earth Award 2023 was bagged by Inverness Loch Ness, Scotland. This special category award recognises global leadership in the fight against climate change and environmental degradation. The winner was selected by ITB Berlin amongst a collection of smart projects for more sustainable tourism.

Another special category award, the People’s Choice Award, allowed the general public to support their favourite Good Practice Story. The 2023 People’s Choice Award campaign ran from 5-23 January. Sagay City, Philippines, received the maximum votes (1749) to win this year’s People’s Choice Award.    

At the close, 6 new applicants to Green Destinations’  Awards & Certification program received their certificate, recognising achieved compliance to the GD Standard of 75 sustainability criteria:

  • Wendland-Elbe (Germany) – Green Destinations Silver
  • Medimurje (Croatia) – Green Destinations Silver 
  • Bombinhas (Brazil) – Green Destinations Silver
  • Itá (Brazil) – Green Destinations Silver
  • Orleans (Brazil) – Green Destinations Bronze
  • Treze Tilias (Brazil) – Green Destinations Bronze
