10th Edition of the Green Destinations Top 100 Stories unveiled

Green Destinations has unveiled the 2024 Top 100 Stories list through a virtual event and anticipates celebrating these accomplishments at an on-site ceremony at the upcoming Green Destinations 2024 Global Conference in Chile.

The 10th edition of the Green Destinations Top 100 competition shares and promotes stories that recount innovative and effective initiatives and projects from destinations working towards more responsible tourism development.

The competition is held under the auspices of the Top 100 Partnership, supported by the Future of Tourism Coalition, with special contributions by ITB Berlin, QualityCoast, Good Travel Guide, Travelife, Ecotourism Australia and DEL Turismo.

The 2024 edition has generated an inspiring collection of Good Practice Stories from 32 countries. By sharing their stories, destination management organisations can be acknowledged and recognised for the solutions they have implemented in response to sustainable tourism challenges and problems. With the tourism sector facing very challenging times in the past years, these destinations’ resiliency and hard work to become more responsible should be celebrated.

Applicants to the competition are first evaluated on the core criteria of the Green Destinations Standard, to ascertain they meet basic sustainability requirements. Upon sufficient compliance with these criteria, they subsequently develop an inspiring story supported by provided training and masterclasses.

This year saw 170+ registrations from 45 countries, with 129 stories submitted. Submissions were evaluated by the Top 100 evaluator team, country experts and partners, coordinated by Green Destinations. The selection criteria considered elements such as the story’s quality, transferability, level of innovation and presence of all sustainability pillars. Please find the list of the selected 2023 Top 100 Destinations as follows:

The Top 100 Committee, chaired by Albert Salman, President of Green Destinations, has stressed that selection to the Top 100 list does not mean the destination is sustainable. Rather, it acknowledges that the destination has made a remarkable or inspiring achievement in making tourism more sustainable that is worth sharing with the world; while complying sufficiently with Green Destinations’ basic sustainability criteria.

At ITB Berlin in March 2025, the best stories of the 2024 Top 100 list will be jury-selected for the annual ‘Green Destinations Story Awards’.

The call for applications for the 2025 Top 100 Stories Competition is expected to open on 1 December 2024.
