Green Destinations played a pivotal role in the Green Tour Project – a transformative initiative to embed sustainable practices across Kyrgyzstan’s tourism sector. By adopting an integrated, business-led approach, the project mobilized local tour operators and their supply chains to adopt Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) practices while strengthening the region’s tourism ecosystem.
A cornerstone of this collaboration was the development of local certification capacity through an Good Travel Seal (GTS) auditor training in Bishkek. This equipped 17 professionals from across Central Asia with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills – including hands-on audits at local hotels and guesthouses. Through rigorous group exercises and a comprehensive certification exam, nine participants earned formal qualifications as sustainability auditors, creating a self-sustaining pool of local expertise to guide businesses through the certification process.
This capacity-building initiative achieved multiple objectives:
- Established in-country certification capabilities to ensure long-term program sustainability
- Provided participating businesses with immediate, actionable feedback to improve their operations
- Developed a cohort of trained professionals who can mentor other businesses across Central Asia
Over 30 businesses were engaged throughout the project.
