The Business Sector Sustainability Scan (BSSS) was conducted among tourism businesses in North York Moors National Park to assess their sustainability practices against internationally recognized criteria, including the Good Travel Scan framework. Over 600 businesses were invited to participate, with responses analyzed to benchmark performance, identify strengths, and highlight areas for improvement. Key findings revealed strong engagement in cultural preservation, local sourcing, and waste reduction, with many businesses eliminating single-use plastics and supporting regional suppliers. However, gaps remained in renewable energy adoption and climate resilience.
The BSSS provided actionable insights, enabling the selection of 22 high-performing businesses—including B&Bs, hotels, and attractions—as potential candidates for a pilot sustainability initiative. Recommendations included tailored training, incentives for green practices, and enhanced collaboration between businesses and conservation groups. This scan not only established a baseline for future improvements but also demonstrated the sector’s commitment to sustainable tourism, paving the way for targeted policy interventions and community-driven environmental stewardship.
