Supported by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) and United Nations Development Program (UNDP), Green Destinations implemented the technical suport towards the recognition of Sigiriya as a sustainable destination and recognition of 200 micro-, small-, and medium tourism enterprises.
Sigiriya, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Sri Lanka’s Central Province and the country’s most visited historical landmark, received its Bronze-level Award at ITB 2025.
Included in the project is the implementation of the Good Travel Seal Business recognition Program, which resulted in the recognition of 200 MSMEs in the country. The recognition scheme provided incentives for tourism businesses to adopt environmentally and culturally sensitive practices that would make them more competitive, both locally and internationally, and help to generate income, provide skilled employment opportunities and create a positive development experience for local people, MSMEs and tourists themselves.
The project also involved several training & capacity building initatives that reached over 100 stakeholders, including local auditor capacity, site guide training, tree wheel drivers training, skills development for key CCF staff, and tourism impact assessment & policy review.
The project led to the formal cooperation of Green Destinations Foundation, Green Destinations Solutions, and Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority in continuing the promotion of Sri Lanka’s national sustainable tourism recognition program.
